While the concept of entertainment has become strongly associated with amusement, it may also have a serious purpose—as in various forms of ceremony, celebration, religious festival or even satire. Entertainment can take the form of a private performance for one person (or even two, with food and wine) or can be scaled up to include a banquet, music, dance and a crowd. Some activities, such as hunting or war, have evolved into spectator sports. Some forms of entertainment, such as play for children, are critical to their social development and cognitive growth.
