Automobiles are self-propelled motor vehicles that are intended for passenger transportation on land. They usually have four wheels and an internal combustion engine fueled most commonly by gasoline, a liquid petroleum fuel. The branches of engineering that deal with the manufacture and technology of automobiles are known as automotive engineering. Today, modern life would be almost inconceivable, or at least highly inconvenient, without access to automobiles.

Perhaps no invention affected American everyday life in the first half of the 20th century more than the automobile. Although the basic technology had been available in Europe since the 19th century, it was Henry Ford who made it practical to the middle class by using the assembly line to mass produce his Model T and make gas-powered cars affordable. The auto industry was soon booming, producing dozens of spin-off industries such as rubber tires, vulcanized rubber and oil refineries. During the 1920s, America led the world in automobile production.
