Entertaiment is a broad category of activities, events, and experiences that provide enjoyment and recreation. It can include movies, television, sports, games, music, writing, reading, live performance, and visual arts. It is used to relieve boredom or to add excitement and interest in one’s life. Entertainment often hits on the points that the brain was evolved to react deeply to, in order to understand and function within a social world.

The word ‘entertainment’ is derived from the Medieval Latin intertenere, meaning ‘to hold inside.’ It is related to the Indo-European root tenere, meaning “stretch.”
